Clock prices at auctions

What I do not understand is that clocks seem to fetch quite high prices at auctions, at least the ones I would like to buy, sometimes surpassing my retail prices and when you consider the cost of restoration, the risk of a clock not being what it seems to be, and no guarantee given, you wonder what is going on in the buyer’s mind.
